Abstract

Introduction: Within chronic pains, back pain has the highest percentage. Psychological factors play an important role in the establishment and continuation of physical disability as well as in functional limitation in patients with chronic low back pain. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) on decreasing the pain, depression and anxiety of patients with chronic low back pain. Methods: This study was an experimental study by pretest- posttest design with a control group. Thirty patients were selected by random sampling among patients with chronic low back pain who referred to Imam Reza and Behsat clinics in Rasht from 2012 to 2013. The study participants were placed in three groups (two experimental and one control group). MBCT (first experimental group) and CBT (second experimental group) were administered in 8 sessions for 90 minutes. The short-form McGill pain Questionnaire (Dworkin et al, 2009) and depression, anxiety, stress scale (Lavibond & Lovibond, 1995) were used for collecting the data in pre-test and post-test stages. One way and multivariate Analysis of Variance were used for analyzing the data. Results: The results showed that there was no meaningful difference between two experimental groups in the mean score of pain, depression, anxiety, though a meaningful difference was observed between these two groups and the control group in regard to above variables. Conclusion: The results support the effectiveness of MBCT and CBT in decreasing pain, depression and anxiety. Therefore, taking account of these two therapeutic methods is very important for patients with chronic low back pain.

Abstract

Introduction: Multiple sclersis (MS) can involve approximately all aspects of life, which leads to different problems for a person such as psychological problems. Therefore, the present study
aimed to evaluate effectiveness of mindfulness-based therapy on the mental health of female patients suffering from MS.

Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, the study sample consisted of 24 patients suffering from MS, who were selected via convenience sampling method. Once the participants were homogenized in regard withg their age, occupation, and education, they were devided into an experimental group (n=12) and a control group (n=12). The study instrument consisted of the general health questionnaire (GHQ-28). The experimental group attended 8 sessions—each lasting 2 hours—of training on mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, whereas the control group did not receive any interventions. In order to analyze the study data, SPSS software( ver, 22) was used via Multivariate analysis of co-variance (MANCOVA).

Results: As the study results demonstrated, the difference between experimental and control groups was proved to be significant in terms of mean scores of mental health and its dimensions (p=0.0001).

Conclusion: The study results supported the effectiveness of mindfulness – based cognitive therapy on mental health of female patients . It can be concluded that this method has ameliorated mental health of MS patients.

Abstract

Introdution: Depression and anxiety are the most common psychiatric disorders. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of various therapies in order to improve the therapeutic methods. In this regard, this research aimed to examine the effectiveness of mindfulness-based treatments on depression and anxiety, based on research studies in Iran from 1380 to 1395.
Methods: Meta-analysis method was employed in this research and a total of 38 publications were selected after a careful study of large number of articles and research studies by using databases such as SID, Magiran, Irandoc, Civilica, Ricest, Noormags and Ensani.ir. Moreover, a checklist was used to check inclusion criteria and extracted data from each study and finally 59 effect sizes were reported. The comprehensive meta analysis software (CMA-2) was used to analyze the collected data.
Results: The results showed that mindfulness-based treatments had been effective for depression and anxiety at significant level less than 0.05. The size of the combined effect for depression and anxiety in terms of scale correlation were reported 0.574 and 0.607, in terms of scale standardized mean difference 1.427 and 1.554 and in terms of scale Hedge's g 1.389 and 1.511, respectively. In addition, study of gender as a moderating variable has not shown significant difference.
Conclusion: The results of this meta-analysis showed that mindfulness-based therapies by using techniques such as paying attention to the present time and accepting without judgment emotions significantly and with high effect size improved the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Abstract

Introduction: Bipolar disorder is combined with chronic symptoms that have effect on cognitive abilities and executive functions. The purpose of present study was to investigate efficacy of mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) on impulsivity and self-inhibition in the patients with bipolar disorder under medical treatment.
Methods: This study was quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest design with the control group. 30 men and women with bipolar disorder referred to psychiatry center of Almahdi Welfare in Esfahan were selected through convenience sampling method and assigned in two groups: experimental (14) and control (16) randomly. Both groups performed behavioral impulsivity scale (BIS-11) and self-inhibition scale (SRS) in the pretest and posttest phases. Experimental group was treated with mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) for 8 sessions. The data were analyzed by MANCOVA.
Results: Covariate analyze demonstrated that  of mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) was effective on reducing the impulsivity and increasing the self-inhibition in the experimental group.
Conclusion: Based on this finding, reduce cognitive impulsivity and motor impulsivity, and increase self-inhibition in anger control, impulse control and respect for others dimensions, is because of mindfulness based on cognitive therapy. Considering psychological intervention based on mindfulness, in addition to medical treatment is of particular importance.
