Abstract

Introduction: Numerous studies showed that lifestyle in the years of growth and adolescence is the most important factor in determining the risk of osteoporosis in later years of life. This study aimed to assess lifestyle and nutritional preventive behaviors of osteoporosis among teenagers in Qazvin in Iran. Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was performed within teenagers, in a population – based sample of 300 students collected via random cluster sampling. Data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire containing 15 questions (Questions items included risk factors related to osteoporosis, preventive behaviors of osteoporosis, and demographic factors). Using SPSS 16, the data were analyzed by Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests. Results: Findings showed that the majority of teenagers (71.3%) do not have regular physical activity. There were significant differences between physical activity patterns of male students and female students (P=0.001). Nutritional habit results showed that female students (66.7%) used foods (34.7%) containing vitamin D more than male students. The results showed that 29.3% of male students and 24.3% of female students didn’t use any calcium absorption increasing ways in the body. Conclusion: The study findings show that osteoporosis in Iranian teenagers appears to correlate with several known risk factors and unsuitable behaviors that were well described in the literature. It revealed that preventive educational strategies on osteoporosis are important in this population. So modifying lifestyle among teenagers seems essential in order to prevent osteoporosis in the future

Abstract

Introduction: Reduced quality of life in cardiac patients and their frequent hospitalizations in the coronary care units is regarded as a main challenge for such patients. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the effectiveness of healthy lifestyle promotion intervention on quality of life in patients with congestive heart failure via cognitive-behavioral procedure.

Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, assessment in pretest, posttest, and follow-up along with the control group were applied. Twenty-six patients with congestive heart failure were selected via convenience sampling among patients attended to Shahid Rajaee Heart hospital in Tehran. Then, they were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n=11; under administration of healthy lifestyle promotion intervention via cognitive-behavioral procedure during eight group sessions once a week) and control group (n=15). Quality of life was measured for all the participants in three phases of pre-test, post-test and follow-up by Questionnaire of Quality of Life in Patients with Heart Failure (IHF-QoL) and Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS).

Results: According to the results of variance analysis with repeated measures, this intervention was proved to have short-time effects on quality of life and its psychological components (P<0.001). Following the therapy termination, patients were returned to baseline, though the effect of intervention on depression was continued within 2 month follow-up (P<0.001).

Conclusion: In regard with the effectiveness of healthy lifestyle promotion intervention via cognitive-behavioral procedure in improving quality of life and its psychological aspects, as well as high costs of hospital and prolonged treatment for these patients, applying this intervention in a permanent manner seem to be beneficial.

Abstract

Introduction: The spread of COVID-19 rapidly affected the daily lives of individuals, including students. It has led to changes in students' usual curricula and nursing students' lifestyles. It has affected not only on the personal life and health of nursing students but also the lifestyle and health of other people in the community. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the lifestyle of nursing students of Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences and Health Services during the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020.
Methods: This was a cross sectional  study in 2020 on 171 nursing students of Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences and Health Services using the convenience sampling method. To collect the required data, demographic information form and lifestyle questionnaire during the COVID-19 epidemic were used. The collected data were then analyzed by SPSS software version 16 using descriptive and inferential statistics methods (independent t-test and ANOVA).
Results: The mean and deviation score of students' general lifestyle was at a moderate level, 38.08 ± 16.8. Mean and deviation scores of both happy and healthy lifestyles were at a low level, 21.66 ± 9.4 and 16.42 ± 8.5, respectively. There was no significant relationship between demographic characteristics and mean lifestyle score (P≥0.05).
Conclusion: Due to the fact that students' lifestyle are at a moderate level and the score of lifestyle components (both happy and healthy) was at a poor level, and given that the end of the COVID-19 pandemic is uncertain, therefore, it is necessary for managers and officials of universities and the Ministry of Health to plan timely and effective interventions to improve the lifestyle of nursing students.
