Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was diagnosis of premature rupture of membranes in suspected patients by measurement of prolactin and B-hCG levels in vaginal washing in order to reduce perinatal mortality and morbidity. Methods: The study included 211 pregnant women who were referred to the emergency of Imam Hossein hospital at 28-38 weeks of pregnancy for leakage or prenatal care from April, 2007 to April, 2008. The expulsion of fluid from the cervix was evaluated and fern and nitrazin tests were done. B-hCG and prolactin levels of vaginal washing fluid were measured. The presence of 2 of 3 parameters of fern test, nitrazin and cervical fluid was defined as absolutely premature rupture of membranes. Mann-Withney U-test was used for analysis. The Roc curve was calculated. Results: There were 132 patients in PROM group and79 patient in the control group. The average age in the PROM and control groups was 26.9‌±6.08 and 26.2±4.84 years, respectively(P=0.074). Both groups were matched for parity and gravidity. Prolactin levels in PROM group were 2930±3737mIU/l versus 23.18±120mIU/l in the control group (P=0.000). B-hCG was 439.78±1867mIU/l in PROM and 17.72±30mIU/l in control group (p=0.000). Sensitivity and specificity of prolactin according to cut-off of 16.0 mIU/l was 79.41% and 96%, respectively. Sensitivity and specificity for B-hCG with cut-off point of 12.5 was 69.85% and 69.33%, respectively. Conclusion: The measurement of prolactin and B-hCG levels in patients with suspected premature rupture of membranes can help in decision-making and treatment.

Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer is regarded as one of the most common female cancers in the world. Many efforts have been made to treat the breast cancer, among which surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy can be mentioned. There is an increasing interest regarding using herbal preparations as a promising source of new anti-cancer drugs because of their safety profile and efficient pharmaceutical potentials. Since citrullus colocynthis proposes some cytotoxic effects against cancer, the present study aimed to explore the effect of hydro alcoholic extract of C. colocynthis fruit on the viability and expression level of Caspase-3 in MCF-7 cell line. Methods: In this laboratory study, the MCF-7 breast cancer cells were treated by different concentrations of Citrullus Colocynthis ethanol extract for 24, 48 and 72 h. The extract effect on cell viability was assessed by trypan blue staining. The RNA extraction was performed, and after the construction of cDNA, expression of Caspase 3 was analyzed via Real-Time PCR. Results: The obtained results revealed a noticeable dose and time dependent reduction in viability of C. colocynthis in the treatment group compared to the control samples. Moreover Real-Time PCR results demonstrated that the expression of Caspase3 gene at 48 and 72 hours after extract treatment significantly increased compared to the control cells. Conclusion: It can be concluded that citrullus colocynthis fruit extract can destroy cancer MCF-7 cells, which is resulted from an increase in caspase 3 gene expression.

Abstract

Introduction: Resistin, as a novel adipocytokine, is associated with type 2 diabetes. The present study aimed to determine the effect of circuit resistance exercise training on plasma resistin concentration and insulin resistance in type 2 diabetic men.

Methods: In this applied experimental study, 24 type 2 diabetic men were selected and randomly assigned into two exercise (n = 15, aged 46.40 ± 3.02 yrs) and control (n = 12, aged 45.06 ± 3.86 yrs) groups. Exercise training was performed in eight weeks, 3 days a week with intensity corresponding to 30-70% 1RM. Before and after exercise, levels of plasma resistin, insulin, blood glucose, HBA1c and HOMA-IR after a 12-h fasting were measured. Following the second blood sampling, data analysis was performed using T-test which, p Value <0.05 was considered significant.

Results: The study findings demonstrated a significant differnce between the exercise  and control groups (p&le0.05) in regard with plasma resistin (p&le0.002), insulin levels (p&le0.001), HOMA-IR (p&le0.001), fasting blood glucose (FBG) (p&le0.001) and HBA1c (p&le0.038).

Conclusion: It seems that circuit resistance exercise training can produce significant effects on  plasma resistin and insulin resistance in type 2 diabetic men. Moreover,  resistin level might be associated with insulin resistance in type 2 diabetic men.

Abstract

Introduction: Infraorbital ethmoid air cells are such anatomical variations may result sinusitis. CT scan is commonly used for imaging infraorbital ethmoid cells but panoramic radiographs often show infraorbital ethmoid cells. This study aim to determaine the prevalence of infraorbital ethmoid cells on panoramic radiographs in cases older than 4 years referred to Dental School of Islamic Azad University Khorasgan Branch.

Methods: In this descriptive and analytical study, 416 panoramic radiographs (235 wemen and 181 men) were examinded for infraobital ethmoid cells and were recorded hallers cell and characteristics of cell in questionnaire form. Data analysis were done by Chi-square test.

Results: Prevalence of infraorbital ethmoid (hallers) cells on panoramic radiographs in the patients older than 4 years referred to Dental School of Islamic Azad University Khorasgan was 17.8% (14.4% for men and 20.4% for wemen). There was satisically significant differences between men and wemen. The most frequency related to the patients who were between 20-29 years old (28.3%) and the least frequent age was between 40-49 years old (13.5%), but there was no satistically significant differences in several ages. There was no relationship between taller’s cells and cell shape. 11 patients (14.9%) with hallers cell had history or symptoms of sinusitis and 4 patients (5.4%) with hallers cell had sinus disorder (retention cyst) in panoramic radiographs.

Conclusions: In this study, the prevalence of infraorbite ethmoid cells on panoramic radiographs was efficient for first diagnosis. Identification of hallers cells on panoramic radiographs can help dental professional to make differential diagnosis of orofcial pain of sinus origin.

Abstract

Introduction: Estimates show that about 3-7% of all couples or women around the world have an unsolved infertility problem. Interleukin-17 (IL-17) is a pro inflammatory cytokine involved in the expression of many inflammatory mediators. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between (rs2275913G/A) IL-17A gene polymorphism with infertility in women.
Methods: This case-control study was carried out on 200 patients with infertility and 200 healthy individuals whose conditions were confirmed by an infertility specialist. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood using the Salting Out method and K Proteinase. To examine the position of rs2275913 polymorphism the RFLP-PCR method was used. Data were statistically analyzed using SPSS software Ver. 20, Chi-square and Hardy-Weinberg tests. The P-values ≤ 0.05 was considered significant.
Results: The results showed that allele A at position rs2275913 had a significant correlation with infertility (P = 0.000). It was found the patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (P = 0.02) and Falobian tube disorders (P = 0.03) showed a significant relationship with rs2275913 Polymorphism.
Conclusion: According to the results, it appears that the rs2275913 polymorphism of IL-17 gene is related to the infertility in women.
