Background and Objective:The success of dental implants is highly dependent on the health of the surrounding soft tissues.Limited knowledge regarding the management and prevention of complications, such as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, can lead to implant failure and bone resorption. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge of final-year dental students and general dentists regarding the management and soft tissue complications following dental implant placement in Yazd, Iran.
Methods:This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Yazd in 2023.A total of 193 participants, including 88 final-year dental students selected via a census method and 105 general dentists recruited through convenience sampling, were included according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria.Data were collected using a validated standard questionnaire comprising items on knowledge of peri-implantitis, its management and treatment modalities, soft tissue augmentation with gingival grafts, and guided bone regeneration(GBR)techniques.
Results:The mean overall knowledge score among participants was 10.41±2.72(moderate level).Most final-year students(72.7%)and general dentists(83.8%)achieved at least 50% of the total knowledge score.More than50%of participants lacked sufficient knowledge regarding the term peri-implant mucositis, the CIST protocol,and the distinction between implant success and implant survival.No statistically significant differences were observed in mean knowledge scores between students and general dentists based on age or sex(p>0.05).
Conclusion:The knowledge level of both final-year dental students and general dentists concerning the management and soft tissue complications of dental implants was moderate, with notable gaps in foundational understanding and treatment approaches.These findings highlight the importance of practical training and continuous professional development in implantology and soft tissue management.
