Introduction: Interventions such as group reminiscence can affect mother’s resilience. This study aimed to investigate the effect reminiscence on the resilience and satisfaction with care in mothers of premature infants hospitalized in neonatal intensive care units.
Methods: In this clinical trial study, 60 mothers of premature infants participated in 1403. They were divided into two groups. reminiscence therapy sessions for each group were held for two weeks. During the sessions, the mothers spoke publicly about their memories. Data were collected using the Connor and Davidson Resilience Questionnaire and the Neonatal Index of Parent Satisfaction (NIP) questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 26 software at a significance level of p<0.05.
Results: The mean resilience score of mothers before the intervention was (37.17±4.81) in the control group and (39.77±4.22) in the experimental group, respectively, and the difference was not significant (p = 0.3). After the intervention, the mean resilience score of mothers in the control group was (55.89±3.58) and in the experimental group was (69.46±5.78), which was a significant increase compared to before the intervention (p = 0.001). After the intervention, the mean satisfaction score of mothers in the control group was (78.63±6.32) and in the experimental group (79.70±7.19), which was not significantly different from before the intervention (p=0.54).
Conclusion: The results showed that reminiscence therapy is effective on the resilience of mothers with premature infants. This low-cost and easy intervention is recommended to increase the mental health of mothers and empower them to better care for their infants in the neonatal intensive care unit.
