Introduction: Osteoporosis and tooth loss are common conditions in postmenopausal women that compromise quality of life. Given inconsistent findings in previous studies, this study investigated the association between osteoporosis and tooth loss in Iranian postmenopausal women.
Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study included 56 postmenopausal women selected via simple random sampling from the Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Assessment Center at Shahid Mohammadi Hospital, Bandar Abbas. BMD was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), categorizing participants by T-score into osteoporotic (n=28) and non-osteoporotic (n=28) groups. Missing teeth were determined by clinical examination. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16, applying independent-samples t-tests to compare mean tooth loss between groups (P<0.05).
Results: Both groups were comparable regarding age, height, weight, education, fracture history, and smoking status (P>0.05P>0.05P>0.05). However, a positive family history of osteoporosis was significantly more frequent in the osteoporotic group (P=0.015). The mean number of missing teeth was significantly higher in women with osteoporosis (10.21±8.27 pm) compared to those without osteoporosis (4.21±2.33pm; P=0.001).
Conclusion: Osteoporosis is significantly associated with greater tooth loss in postmenopausal women. Evaluating bone density in women presenting with tooth loss, alongside monitoring dental health in osteoporotic patients, may facilitate earlier diagnosis and comprehensive management of both conditions.
